Chania bicycles greece aliveBicycles for public use will be available in Chania, Crete, starting August 2015 for reaidents but also visitors – anyone who wants to ride through the city but doesn’t have a bicycle.

The town’s municipality will provide 72 bicycles which will be distributed to four points across Chania, where, according to plan, users will be able to pick up and return them.
These four will be on Markopoulou square, Katechaki square, Talo square, and Defkalionos street.

To use this service, users will need to get a special card from the local municipality and register – this will cost 1€.

Users must be over 18 years old, and according to regulations the bicycles’ use is free for three hours. After that and for a further 24h time period, there is a 1€ fine per hour, and if usage exceeds 24h but is less than 7 days, the fine incurred will be 110€. Post a 7 days delay in returning the bicycle, the fine amounts to 250€. The fine is also 250€ in case of loss or damage.

According to the vice mayor of Chania Yannis Marakis, the service will expand to more than four collection/return points after review of the pilot programme.
